Thanks for your sighting Tammy. I am a co-ordinator of citizen science studies into the diet and nesting ecology of the Gang-gang. The diet study was recently published and Liquidambar pods are a major food item during May across the Gang-gang's range. Gang-gangs have suffered a massive recent decline in your part of the world. We have located about 80 Gang-gang nests and are making observations on fledgling success, predation rates and nest hollow selection. Despite quite a bit of effort we have not been able to locate any nests in the Blue Mountains - Richmond area. Would very much appreciate any sightings you see of Gang-gangs looking into, entering/leaving, chewing bark around or in a hollow. The bird you have photographed is a Juvenile male but we don't know how far they may travel from a nest site or even how long juvenile plumage lasts - it seems to be up to two years in some birds. Cheers Michael Mulvaney
They are a group of 6, with Males and Females. Our family will look for hollows and track them on our property. They arrived in January and have made our place home since then.
Thanks - very much appreciated. Nesting season is from September - mid February, but they check out hollows all year round and will use some of the ones they are checking. A guide to the nesting behaviours to look out for can be down loaded from http://redhillregenerators.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Gang-gang-tell-tale-nesting-behaviours-Mulvaney-Tyrell-Davey-2022.pdf Thanks again Michael Mulvaney
