Hi Leo, I've been poring through my various field guides on this one and I still think they give the nod to Baillons Crake. In particular the photo (pg132) of a Baillons crake in "Birds of Australia" (A photographic guide) looks exactly like this sighting. The distinguishing features I see are: 1 - No red spot at the base of the bill (as in Aus Spotted). 2 - No white spotting on the back and extending down into the grey on the flanks (as in Aus Spotted). 3 - The rufous coloration on the back and neck extends down over the shoulder on the sighting photos (especially noticeable in photo 3) as in Baillons Crake. If it is a Baillons Crake then I'd think it's probably a female as there is no prominant rufous eye stripe.
